Profile

The Animal Care and Ethics Committee (ACEC) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Syiah Kuala University, is an independent committee established to ensure that all research, teaching, and community service activities involving animals are conducted in accordance with internationally recognized principles of animal welfare and research ethics.

The Committee supports the Faculty’s commitment to excellence in veterinary education, scientific research, and professional services by promoting the ethical use of animals, safeguarding animal welfare, and ensuring compliance with national regulations and internationally accepted ethical standards. The Committee reviews research protocols involving live animals, evaluates potential welfare impacts, and provides recommendations to ensure that scientific objectives are achieved while minimizing pain, distress, and unnecessary use of animals.

In carrying out its responsibilities, the Committee adopts the principles of the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) and encourages researchers to implement responsible and humane animal care practices. Through ethical oversight, education, and continuous quality improvement, the Animal Care and Ethics Committee contributes to advancing high-quality veterinary research and strengthening public confidence in animal-based scientific studies.

Misi

  1. To ensure that all animal-based research, teaching, and community service activities comply with national regulations and internationally accepted ethical standards.
  2. To protect the welfare of animals used in scientific activities through ethical review and continuous monitoring based on the principles of the Three Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement).
  3. To provide independent, transparent, and professional ethical review of research protocols involving animals.
  4. To promote awareness and understanding of animal ethics, responsible animal care, and good research practices among researchers, students, and academic staff.
  5. To support the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Syiah Kuala University, in advancing high-quality veterinary education, research, and innovation while maintaining the highest standards of scientific integrity and animal welfare.
