To ensure the health and halal compliance of qurban animals, Syiah Kuala University (USK) has deployed 495 personnel to join the Supervisory Team for the Inspection and Slaughter of Qurban Animals (SPPHQ) for the year 2025. This team consists of 428 veterinary medicine students and 66 lecturers. They were also equipped with vitamins and supplements.
The team was officially dispatched by USK Rector, Prof. Marwan, in a ceremony held at the main courtyard of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) USK, Darussalam Campus, Banda Aceh, two days ago, on Monday, June 2.
The SPPHQ team has been deployed to Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar District. In addition, 20 students were sent to conduct qurban animal health inspections outside Aceh Province.
Their mission is to supervise and examine the health of animals prior to slaughter, and to educate the public on proper qurban slaughtering procedures according to Islamic teachings and animal welfare principles.
Speaking to Media Indonesia on Wednesday (June 4), USK Rector Prof. Marwan expressed his appreciation and support for the active role of the university’s academic community—especially the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine—in supporting society in preparing for Eid al-Adha.
“This SPPHQ team represents USK’s real contribution to community service. Their presence is crucial to ensure that the sacrificial animals are healthy and that the slaughter process is performed properly, in accordance with Islamic law and animal welfare standards,” said the Rector, who holds a doctoral degree from the University of Birmingham, UK.
He added that the SPPHQ program is carried out annually by USK, the beloved university of the Acehnese people. The goal is to ensure that the qurban ritual is conducted safely, hygienically, and in compliance with halal principles.
The activity also serves as a practical learning platform for students, and a tangible form of the university’s community service efforts.
Meanwhile, Dean of FKH USK, Dr. Teuku Reza Ferasyi, stated that this year’s team will be dispatched to around 54 qurban slaughter sites, covering 37 villages (gampong) in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar. The inspection and slaughter supervision will take place from June 6 to June 8, 2025.
“We hope this initiative will have a positive impact both for the community and for FKH USK students. Students will gain real-world experience regarding the health status of animals in the field, and they’ll be able to apply their clinical skills and veterinary knowledge directly,” said Teuku Reza.
He also expressed hope for continued collaboration with various stakeholders, from village-level leadership to local government agencies, to ensure that future qurban activities can be even better managed.
The dispatch ceremony was marked by the symbolic handover of team attributes by the Rector, and was attended by Vice Rectors, Senate Chairpersons, Deans and Vice Deans, the Head of the Aceh Provincial Livestock Agency, representatives of the Aceh and Banda Aceh MPU (Ulama Consultative Council), and other institutional leaders within USK.
This moment also signified the start of a humanitarian mission and community service by USK’s veterinary professionals and students.
The 2025 SPPHQ program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, which focus on sustainable practices and collaborative efforts to achieve development targets.
