Banda Aceh – Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) has deployed 429 students and 66 lecturers as part of the 2025 Supervisory Team for Qurban Animal Inspection and Slaughter (SPPHQ).

“This SPPHQ team is a tangible form of USK’s community service. Their presence is crucial to ensure that sacrificial animals are in healthy condition and that the slaughtering process is carried out correctly in accordance with Islamic teachings and animal welfare principles,” said USK Rector Prof. Marwan in Darussalam on Tuesday.

He explained that the SPPHQ team will be assigned to the Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar areas, with 20 students also conducting animal inspections outside the Aceh Province.

“They will be deployed to various locations to supervise and inspect the health of qurban animals before and after slaughter, and also to educate the public on proper Islamic slaughtering practices based on religious law and animal welfare standards,” he said.

“This SPPHQ program has been an annual agenda implemented by USK over the past several years. It is part of our effort to ensure the qurban rituals are carried out in a safe, healthy, and halal manner,” he added.

He emphasized that the program also serves as a hands-on learning platform for students and a concrete contribution of the university to community service.

Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) USK, Dr. drh. Teuku Reza Ferasyi, stated that the team will be stationed at over 54 qurban slaughter sites across Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, covering 37 gampong (villages). The SPPHQ activities will take place from June 6 to 8, 2025.

“We hope this program will have a positive impact both for the community and for our veterinary students. It gives them direct field experience in handling animals and applying clinical skills and veterinary knowledge in real-world settings,” he said.

Teuku Reza also expressed hope for continued collaboration with all stakeholders, from village-level leaders to district and city governments, to support better implementation of future qurban practices.

The 2025 SPPHQ initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
