Banda Aceh, 5 December 2024 – The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Syiah Kuala University (FVM USK), hosted a webinar titled “Ethical Review of Animal Research: Global Challenges and Reputable Publications” on 5 December 2024. The event, conducted via Zoom, featured Drh. Fitriya Nur Annisa Dewi, Ph.D., Cert. LAM, as the keynote speaker, with opening remarks delivered by the Dean of FVM USK.
In his opening speech, the Dean highlighted the importance of ethical compliance in animal research, emphasizing its critical role in ensuring both the welfare of research animals and the integrity of scientific outcomes. “Ethical considerations are at the heart of responsible research. Upholding these standards is essential for gaining public trust and achieving publication in reputable journals,” he stated.
Drh. Fitriya Nur Annisa Dewi, a prominent expert in laboratory animal medicine and ethics, provided an in-depth presentation on the global challenges surrounding ethical research with animal models. She discussed international guidelines, including the 3Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement), and their implications for research practices in Indonesia.
“The ethical review process is becoming increasingly rigorous, especially for researchers aiming to publish in high-impact journals,” Dr. Fitriya explained. “Researchers must not only ensure compliance with ethical standards but also demonstrate the societal relevance and scientific value of their work.”
The webinar attracted participants from various academic and research institutions, including lecturers, postgraduate students, and laboratory professionals. The session featured an interactive discussion on ethical dilemmas, regulatory frameworks, and strategies for addressing reviewers’ concerns regarding animal welfare in scientific publications.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the insights provided by Dr. Fitriya, particularly on practical approaches to navigating ethical challenges and enhancing the credibility of their research for international audiences.
