Product-Based Community Service
Increasing the Productivity of Aceh Cattle Through the Introduction of HPT Superior and Making UMB Plus”
In Gampong Deudap Pulo Nasi, Pulo Aceh District
Implementation Team: Sugito, Dasrul, dan Mira Delima

The problems solved in this service activity are: a). introducing superior fodder forage, in the form of planting odot grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and Lampung grass (Setaria sphacelata); b). conduct training on making additional plus feed (UMB Plus herbal deworming) by utilizing existing local natural resources and the use of rice straw as an alternative feed source; and c). carry out learning and mentoring activities to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills of the community in the cultivation of raising environmentally friendly cattle. The solution mentioned above to reduce the problems in the cattle rearing business carried out is still sober without qualified housing and inadequate availability of forage feed. As a result, the condition of the cow becomes thin so that its productivity is not optimal. Cows are left all day to forage for themselves, as a result of which the presence of cows can interfere with agricultural businesses and also contaminate houses or public roads. On the other hand, most people claim that for them, owning cattle is the main savings whenever necessary.

The implementation of this product-based service is carried out starting from the preparation stage and the implementation stage of activities. In the preparatory stage, it begins with the socialization of this service activity, land determination and hpt planting, making rice straw sites, mentoring, and making UMB-Plus. HPT planting is carried out on an area of 50 x 70 m. On this land, two types of superior grass have been planted, namely odot grass (Pennisetum purpureum) as many as 2,000 cuttings and Lampung grass (Setaria sphacelata) as many as 500 clumps (pols). To provide sufficient water during the dry season, dug wells have been made to meet the needs of watering grass and ring wells as a source of drinking water for livestock. For the storage of rice straw, the construction of a 4 x 8 m rice straw storage cage has been carried out and also the rehab of the existing cage. This hay shed is estimated to be able to hold hay for the stock for 2 months for 30 cows to consume during the dry season.

The results of learning and mentoring activities can improve the management of cow rearing. Cows at night are not removed anymore and are only released after 12.00. This condition makes the atmosphere of public roads cleaner, there is not much cow dung scattered, the comfort of garden owners, and the management of feeding, including UMB and drinking water is easier to do. This service activity has been able to be carried out according to stages because it has received very good support/response from the community, especially service partners. The results of the observations showed that the superior grass Pennisetum purpureum (odot grass) is better / suitable for cultivation than the Lampung grass (Setaria sphacelata). Mentoring activities have successfully improved planting management &forage care, and the manufacture of UMB-plus. The results of observations in cows showed that after the administration of UMB-plus there was a decrease in the number of helminth eggs per gram of feces.
