The Aceh area besides being an agricultural area has also been known as a supplier of meat cattle to other regions. Realizing the socioeconomic situation of the people related to the agrarian potential of this area, the acting Regional Government and community leaders prioritized the establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry (FKHP) as the Second Faculty after the Faculty of Economics. The hope contained in it is that undergraduates who graduate from this Faculty are able to increase the development of animal husbandry in this area. As a step towards the realization of the establishment of the faculty, the Regional Government together with the Aceh Regional War Ruler (PEPERDA) on January 9, 1960 formed the FKHP Development Preparation Committee with the following composition:

This committee is tasked with preparing needs related to the establishment of FKHP, such as finding teaching staff, conducting approaches with other FKHP / FKH in Indonesia, contacting the ministers of P.P. and K, and providing housing for prospective teaching staff. The committee sent a delegation consisting of drh. R. M. Soedjono Ronowinoto, dr. R. Soegianto Kartowigoeno, Ir. Achmad Soedarsan and Anwar to hold talks with the Head of the Higher Education Coordination Bureau of the Ministry of Education as well as with the Ministers of P.P. and K, which revolved around financing and lecturers as well as the necessary conditions of the Ministry of P.P. and K. Establishing a Technical Commission of the P.P. and K. Departments consisting of Drs. M. A. Gani of the Higher Education Coordination Bureau (as  Chairman) drh. M. Farichin Sumintawidjaja from FKHP Gajah Mada University (as Vice Chairman) and drh. Kridarso Budi Prajitno from FKHP Gajah Mada University (as Secretary). On July 11, 1960, in the room of the Aceh Special Region’s Office of The Womanhood Office, a meeting was held between the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of FKHP and the Technical Commission of the P.P. and K Departments.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the Technical Commission of the P.P. and K. Departments, Drs. M. A. Gani outlined the brief history of the formation of the Technical Commission and the Duties of the Commission in conducting its review of the preparations for the opening of the faculty. His task was to collect materials to be presented to the Ministers of P.P. and K. This Technical Commission received moral support and material assistance from Gajah Mada University. After the Technical Commission of the P.P. and K. Departments reported the results of their observations to the Ministers of P.P. and K., then the Ministers of P.P. and K. sent a wire to the Governor of the Head of the Special Region of Aceh as Deputy Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of FKHP stating that the faculty could be opened in Banda Aceh on the 10th of  October 1960 in the City of Darussalam Students. Then the Ministers of P.P. and K. issued Decree No. 79966 / Law, dated October 17, 1960 concerning the Establishment of FKHP as part of the University of North Sumatra, Medan. On October 17, 1960, in the Hall of the Faculty of Economics Darussalam Banda Aceh, the inauguration ceremony of the Opening of FKHP was held which was attended by the Director General of the Directorate of Higher Education Prof. Dr. Soegiono D. Poesponegoro representing the Minister of P.P. and K. Also present at the ceremony were the President of the University  North Sumatra Prof. dr. A. Sofyan, several Deans of the Faculties of the University of North Sumatra, members of the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of FKHP as well as civil, military and police officials, prospective students and invitees.

The ceremony was signed the “Charter” of FKHP on behalf of the Minister of P.P. and K. by Prof. Dr. R. Soegiono D. Poesponegoro and the wearing of the position necklace to the Dean of the Faculty, drh. R. M. Soedjono Ronowinoto which was carried out by the President of the University of North Sumatra, Prof. dr. A. Sofyan. The first lecture began on November 7, 1960 with the number of registered students as many as 62 people. For the smooth running of the faculty, for the time being as the Secretary of the Faculty, he was held by drh. Hasan Zaini. Most of the teaching staff at that time had the status of extraordinary lecturers. On June 28, 1961 the Minister of PTIP issued a Decree that drh. R. M. Soedjono Ronowinoto acted as Acting Dean, with a decree. No. 39234/C/III/PTIP, and the Secretary of the Faculty was held by drh. Farichin Soemintawidjaja with the determination of the Director General of Higher Education No. 1741/4/DPT/61, dated June 1, 1961.With the realization of the establishment of Syiah Kuala University in Darussalam Banda Aceh based on the Decree of the Minister of PTIP No. 11/1961 dated June 21, 1961, the inauguration of which was carried out by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno,  and the Minister of PTIP on April 27, 1962, then FKHP was integrated into Syiah Kuala University. The handover ceremony was conducted on November 30, 1961.

Shortly after the handover, the FKHP Leadership was entrusted to Drs. Soebagio Sapoetro (Aceh Regional Warfare Staff Officer). Then due to his move to Jakarta in May 1962, the position of faculty leader was transferred to drh. Abdullah Ali who also concurrently serves as Secretary of the Faculty. The purpose of FKHP is to educate students to become undergraduates who have expertise in the fields of veterinary medicine and animal husbandry, are dedicated and able to stand alone in fostering and building science for development purposes. Therefore, the nature of education and teaching must be dynamic that always looks at regional interests and is in line with the pace of national development. Thus the revision of the curriculum should be a continuous process of any higher education. In the early years of its establishment until 1968 the Faculty produced veterinarians who were also experts in animal husbandry. After being felt that the knowledge possessed by graduates is not adequate. In 1968 FKHP ventured to open the Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Animal Husbandry. This division of majors is carried out in the third year of education. Thus since 1968 at level three there is the Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Animal Husbandry. In 1980 a review of the ongoing curriculum was carried out, including the division of majors. Since the academy year 1981/1982 the Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Animal Husbandry have been started since students started attending lectures in the first semester. The division of majors since the beginning of this college year lasted until 1985.

Based on the Decree of the Minister of P and K Number 1312 dated October 10, 1985, the Department of Animal Husbandry was integrated into the Faculty of Agriculture. Thus the FKHP of Syiah Kuala University is named the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) of Syiah Kuala University. This faculty until now has only one department, namely the Department of Veterinary Clinic. The purpose of FKH is to educate students to become veterinarians who have expertise in their fields, are dedicated and are able to stand alone in fostering and building knowledge for development purposes.

FKH LEADERSHIP PERIOD

The organizational structure of FKHP/FKH Unsyiah in the initial five periods was still very simple. In the first period (1960-1961), the faculty leadership was held by drh. R. M. Soedjono Ronowinoto who was appointed by the Minister of PTIP based on Decree No. 3934 / C / III / PTIP / 61, dated June 28, 1961 and the Secretary of the Faculties hádala drh. M. Farichin Soemintawidjaja who was appointed based on the decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 1741 / 4 / DPT / 61 dated June 1, 1961. In the Second Period (1961-1962) there were two transfers of faculty leadership duties.

First, the transfer of the Dean’s duties from drh. R.M.Soedjono Ronowinoto to Drs. As Dean, who will soon arrive in Banda Aceh from the United States. In the waiting time for his presence, the position was temporarily held by the Rector of Syiah Kuala University (Drs. Ibrahim Hasan, MBA) while the routine duties of the Faculty were carried out by the Assistant Deans for the ninth period, namely held by Drs. Burhanuddin Salim, Drs. Hasanuddin Husin and Drs. Gunawan. The head of the faculty for the eleventh and twelfth periods was held by Dr. Abdullah Ali, M. Sc. Assistant Deans for the eleventh period (1977-1979) was drh. Damrin Lubis,  M. Razali Sulaiman as Assistant Dean I, drh. T. Iskandar as Assistant Dean II and Drs. Chaidir Yusuf as Assistant Dean III.The position of dean for the fourteenth period  (1984-1987) still continued by Dr. Noerjanto Wignjosusastro, M. Sc.

Likewise, the Assistant Dean I and Assistant Dean II did not undergo a change, only the position of Assistant Dean III was considered to be received from Drs. Chaidir Yusuf to Drs. Helmi MY. In 1986 Dr. Noerjanto Wignjosusastro, M. Sc. Returned torahmatullah, as the head of the faculty while being held directly by the Rector of Syiah Kuala University (Dr. Abdullah Ali, M. Sc.). In this period also the position of Assistant Dean I was transferred from drh. Razali Sulaiman to drh. Mufti Kamaruddin, MS, due to the assignment of drh.
