BANDA ACEH – Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), through its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, successfully hosted The First International Conference on Sustainable Environmental and Animal Research (1st ICSEAR 2025) on October 13–14, 2025. The event was officially opened by USK Rector, Prof. Marwan, at the AAC Dayan Dawood Building, Banda Aceh, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Drh. Teuku Reza Ferasyi, explained that the conference aims to promote concrete actions toward the sustainability of tropical ecosystems and animal welfare. The event was organized in collaboration with four partner universities: Universitas Negeri Padang, Universitas Riau, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan.

“Through the ICSEAR Forum, Universitas Syiah Kuala aims to strengthen its international network in education, research, and academic publication—particularly in the areas of tropical ecosystem sustainability and animal welfare,” he said.

The conference featured several distinguished global experts, including Prof. Goh Yong Meng (Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia), Prof. Hammam Riza (President of Korika Indonesia), and Prof. Arief Boediono (Professor, School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, IPB University).
Other speakers included Prof. Tae Sub Park from Seoul National University and Associate Prof. Kim Hie Lim from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
Indonesia’s Minister of Creative Economy, Teuku Riefky Harsya, and Deputy Minister of Forestry, Rohmat Marzuki, also delivered their remarks virtually.

In his address, Prof. Marwan emphasized that ICSEAR represents a tangible step by Universitas Syiah Kuala toward becoming a World Class University. He highlighted that global excellence is not only reflected by rankings but also by the university’s real impact in driving global change.
The veterinary medicine field has long been one of USK’s leading strengths, actively conducting research and community outreach to enhance animal welfare.

“ICSEAR is a manifestation of our collective commitment to sustainable development. Through this forum, we aim to transform science into real-world action,” the Rector stated.

Meanwhile, Member of Commission IV of the Indonesian Parliament, Ir. H.T.A. Khalid, expressed his appreciation for the success of the event and encouraged USK, particularly its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, to continue its active role in wildlife preservation in Aceh.
“The population of rare and wild animals in Aceh continues to decline. Universitas Syiah Kuala must be at the forefront of efforts to protect our fauna,” he said.

As part of the conference, Universitas Syiah Kuala also presented the “2025 Indonesian Wildlife Conservation Award” to the Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni, Ir. H.T.A. Khalid, Wali Nanggroe Tgk. Malik Mahmud Al Haythar, and Aceh Governor H. Muzakir Manaf, in recognition of their significant contributions to wildlife conservation in Indonesia, particularly in the Aceh region.
